Sky Yasutake is a 9th grader at Kamehameha Schools. He enjoys playing percussion, participating in theater, and staying active through tennis. Sky has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2022. In his free time, he likes to spend time with friends, family and dog, play games, and watch movies.
Evangeline (Evie) Tjoeng is an 8th grader at Niu Valley Middle School. She has played cello for the past ten years and enjoys playing in orchestra both outside and inside of school. Evie has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2024. In her free time, she like reading, knitting, spending time with friends and family and doting on her cat, Gladdy.
Zoe Fernandez is an 8th grader at Niu Valley Middle School. Zoe has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2023. She plays Violin in her schools orchestra and enjoys playing volleyball. In her free time she enjoys studying and crafts such as crocheting.
Lucas Magel is a 8th grader at Niu Valley Middle School. He plays drums with his dad but likes to play many instruments. Lucas likes to sail, skate, and has a few other hobbies. Lucas has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2023. Through the Music Olympics, he hopes to learn a lot of songs and get really good at both drums and keyboard percussion instruments.
Leia Nishida is an 8th grader at Niu Valley Middle School. Leia has been on the Music Olympics board since 2024. She plays piano, ukulele, and percussion along with having played volleyball since 2nd grade as a setter/opposite. In her free time, she enjoys reading, crocheting, drawing, and playing with her cat, Pumpkin.
Rayden Akao is a 7th grader at Niu Valley Middle School. In his free time he plays sports like Basketball, golf and spends time with family and friends. Rayden has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2024. He also plays percussion and works hard in school.
Saedee Shimauchi is a 7th grader at Niu Valley School Middle School. Saedee has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2024. She enjoys learning and playing the piano as well as percussion instruments. Other activities she does is drawing, conversing with friends, and practicing a Naginata.
Easton Ishikawa is a 7th grader at Niu Valley Middle School. Easton has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2024. He enjoys playing basketball, making music, and exploring video games. His favorite foods are sushi and ramen, and in his free time, he likes to play Fortnite.
James Kunihiro is a 10th grader at Kaiser High School. James plays piano, drums, and occasionally does bucket drumming. James has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2022. He enjoys listening to music and playing video games. James likes to talk to his friends, eat dessert, and play piano.
Ryo Ooi is a 9th grader at Kaiser High School. He has played piano since second grade. Ryo has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2023. He enjoys percussion and taking on new and challenging songs. Ryo also plays soccer outside of school. He is a hard worker and hopes that he can be a better leader by helping others when they need a hand.
Leif Pickman is a 8th grader at Niu Valley Middle School. Leif is 12 years old and currently plays ukulele in school. Leif has been on the Music Olympics Board since 2023. In his free time, he plays soccer and sails.
Katy Luo is a pianist, educator, and lecturer in music at both the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and the University of Hawai‘i at West O‘ahu. She is an alumna of the Young Musicians Program. Her passion for and commitment to community organization led to her involvement formerly at the Boys Choir of Harlem and at the Bloomingdale School of Music, where she was both Resident Teaching Artist and the Founder/Director of A4TY, providing children the opportunity to compose original compositions for fellow young musicians and to premiere works written by living composers. Since moving to Hawaii, Katy continued serving as President of the Hawaii Music Teachers Association, performing with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, and collaborating with/advising local organizations on regenerative strategies for growth and sustainability. In her free time, Katy enjoys exploring natural places in Hawaii, swimming in the ocean, and outrigger canoe paddling.
Kent Miyashiro taught music as a Hawaii Department of Education teacher from 1984 to 2019. His work experience took him to stints at Molokai High and Intermediate, Kalakaua Middle School, Niu Valley Middle School, Jarrett Middle School and Ewa Makai Middle School. His philosophy centered around the premise, "Teach students to share the joy and beauty of making music." Many learning opportunities were based on collaborative efforts with colleagues, professional musicians and community partners. Most memorable were projects and performances spanning over 10 years, from three different schools with Mr. Morita. Mr. Miyashiro has also enjoyed guest conducting, adjudicating and volunteering for other music educators. Recently retired, Mr. Miyashiro has rekindled his passion for fishing and playing the saxophone.
Zachary Morita is in his 16th year as a music teacher at Niu Valley Middle School. He was recently selected as a 2020-22 Hawaii State Teacher Fellow within the Hawaii Department of Education. Zachary is a winner of the 2018 Farmers Insurance $100,000 Dream Big Teacher Challenge. Zachary serves as Associate Music Director of the Honolulu Wind Ensemble, President/Founder of the Hawaii Youth Percussion Ensemble, and has served as Treasurer and Solo & Ensemble Chairperson for the Oahu Band Directors Association. Zachary also presented at the following statewide education conferences: 2019 and 2020 Schools of the Future Conference, 2019 HI DOE Education Leadership Institute, 2019 HI DOE iTEaCH Conference, and the 2019 Hawaii Association of Middle Level Education.
